I’m sure many Singaporeans would find the recent landslide election victory of the UK’s Labour Party inspiring and exciting. The British people have voted overwhelmingly for change after fourteen years of rule by the Conservative Party.
However, I’m more attracted by the new UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s call for “a return of politics to public service”.
I found this relevant even for Singapore. While we are not beset by corruption and cronyism as in many other countries, there are concerns among Singaporeans whether our politicians treat politics as a privilege to serve in public service or as an entitlement to high salaries and other benefits. We want our politicians to always adopt a humble attitude of respecting each and every citizen and the contributions of the working people.
For Singapore to progress, we will need to keep voting in more politicians who are true public servants. People who choose to enter politics to give back to their community, rather than to people who are driven by personal gain and seeking a career path towards a life of luxury.
